Hey friend,
Have you ever been overwhelmed by feelings of uncertainty or fear of the unknown? Fear. Worry. Anxiety. They’re often intertwined, and in today’s newsletter, I’ll be shedding some light on anxiety and sharing a few helpful tips for managing it.
Most times, we find ourselves ruminating over events that are yet to unfold. We fear that things won’t go as planned or that something chaotic will appear out of the blues to ruin it all.
Remember when you had an important exam coming up? Or a complicated task at work that kept you constantly on edge? Or that nervous excitement you felt before a big date?
That’s what anxiety is. That feeling of fear and worry about what might happen in the future. It can cause us to sweat, feel restless, have an unusually rapid heartbeat, or experience increased blood pressure, which can indeed be exhausting.
While anxiety is a normal response to stress, and we all feel it sometimes, if it’s not properly managed, it can develop into a mental health condition known as ANXIETY DISORDER.
What are Anxiety Disorders?
Anxiety disorders are actually the most common type of mental disorder and are estimated to affect almost 30% of adults at certain phases of life. For a person to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, the level of anxiety is usually way out of proportion and has probably begun to interfere with their ability to function well.
Some common causes include environmental factors like stress or trauma, genetic factors (as it can run in families), brain chemistry changes, and difficult life experiences like physical or emotional abuse.
Recognizing Anxiety Symptoms
The symptoms of anxiety disorders can be psychological or physical.
Psychological symptoms may include difficulty concentrating, persistent feelings of panic or extreme fear, and uncontrollable, obsessive thoughts.
Physical symptoms may include heart palpitations, restlessness, shortness of breath, cold or sweaty hands, dry mouth, numbness in hands or feet, insomnia, and nausea.
If you ever notice these symptoms in yourself or someone else, it is important to seek help early. Getting the right support can make a big difference.
Tips for Managing Anxiety
Like almost all health conditions, anxiety can be treated and managed. Some common options include:
Psychotherapy (Talk therapy)
Medications (when necessary)
Self-care and complementary approaches like:
Stress management practices (deep breathing, mindfulness, relaxation exercises)
Support groups or safe communities (like Mental Drive Africa)
Learning more about anxiety and how it works
Journaling to process your thoughts and feelings
Regular physical activity (even simple walks can help ease anxiety)
Getting adequate rest and prioritizing good sleep
Reducing caffeine and sugar intake, as they can worsen anxiety
Spending time with loved ones and doing things you enjoy
Let’s Keep Talking About Mental Health
Mental health conditions are real. Sadly, in our part of the world, they are often taken lightly or brushed aside. Sometimes, these conditions and illnesses are considered normal experiences because of cultural, religious, or societal beliefs.
Yes, anxiety is a normal human emotion. It’s natural to worry about uncertainties. But when those worries become extreme or start to take over, it’s time to take necessary steps.
You deserve to feel well. You deserve support. And most importantly, you deserve to know you’re not alone.
I hope you found this helpful, friend. Feel free to write back to us.
Have a beautiful week ahead. And remember, MDA dey for you. Always.
